ETHICAL GUIDELINES

Commitment to Rigorous Originality & Scholarly Ethics

Overview

The Assyfa Journal of Islamic Studies (AJIS) is deeply committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity. We expect all contributing authors to exercise meticulous care and adhere to international ethical standards, particularly regarding the prevention of plagiarism.

Plagiarism occurs when an author incorporates ideas, data, or verbatim text from another source without providing appropriate credit. Regardless of intent—whether deliberate or accidental—plagiarism constitutes a severe breach of academic trust and is strictly prohibited within our publication framework.

Criterion 01

Factual Information & Detailed Data

When an author utilizes specific information—including names, dates, geographic locations, statistical figures, or technical details—obtained from a specific source, a formal citation is mandatory.

Exception: General knowledge that is common across five or more reputable sources (e.g., "Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population") does not require specific citation.

Criterion 02

Conceptual Frameworks & Methodologies

The adoption of conceptual ideas from another scholar requires explicit attribution, even if the current author expands upon or modifies that idea. This applies to interpretive frameworks, methodological approaches, and unique scholarly conclusions. In instances of further development, authors must cite the original source first, then clearly distinguish their own added value in subsequent sentences.

Criterion 03

Verbatim Language & Direct Quotations

Authors must use both citations and quotation marks for any direct phrasing borrowed from another work. If four or more consecutive words are identical to a source, quotation marks are required to signal the use of another author's original voice. Relying on a citation alone for verbatim text without quotation marks is considered a form of plagiarism.

20%

The Screening Process

To ensure total compliance, AJIS employs a rigorous multi-stage screening process:

  • Automated Scanning: Every submitted manuscript is processed through Turnitin for a comprehensive similarity analysis.
  • Editorial Review: Editors manually inspect Turnitin reports to distinguish between legitimate citations (e.g., bibliography, standard terminology) and potential plagiarism.
  • Similarity Threshold: Total similarity scores must strictly remain under 20 percent.

Sanctions: The Editorial Board reserves the absolute right to reject manuscripts or withdraw acceptance if a paper is found to violate the standards of academic integrity outlined above.

By submitting to AJIS, authors confirm that their work is original, has not been published elsewhere, and adheres to all plagiarism screening requirements.
