Preservation Policy

The Assyfa Journal of Islamic Studies (AJIS) is profoundly committed to the permanent preservation of its scholarly content. We recognize that in the digital era, the long-term accessibility of research is vulnerable to rapid technological obsolescence and hardware failure. This policy outlines our multi-layered strategy to ensure that Islamic scholarly discourse remains available, authentic, and citable for centuries to come.

1

Global Archiving Networks

LOCKSS & CLOCKSS: AJIS utilizes the Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe (LOCKSS) system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries. This allows libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. We also participate in CLOCKSS (Controlled LOCKSS) to ensure a dark archive that can be triggered for public access in the event the journal ceases operation.

PKP Preservation Network (PN): As an OJS-based journal, we are integrated with the PKP PN. This network provides free preservation services for any OJS journal that meets a few basic criteria, digitally preserving our content in a secure, decentralized manner across multiple global nodes.

National Library of Indonesia (IPI/OneSearch): AJIS regularly deposits published volumes into the National Library of Indonesia's digital repository, ensuring that our contribution to national and religious intellectual heritage is secured within sovereign data infrastructures.

2

Persistent Identifiers & Interoperability

DOI Implementation: Every article is assigned a unique Digital Object Identifier (DOI) via CrossRef. DOIs act as persistent links that resolve to the current location of the article, ensuring that citations remain valid even if the journal's domain or URL structure changes.

OAI-PMH Metadata Harvesting: AJIS supports the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. This enables our metadata (titles, abstracts, keywords, and references) to be harvested by global indexing services (such as Google Scholar, Dimensions, and Scilit), creating redundant records of our content across the web.

ORCID Connectivity: We require or strongly encourage authors to provide their ORCID iDs. This links the research output to the researcher’s permanent digital profile, preventing authorship ambiguity over the long term.

3

File Integrity & Technical Standards

PDF/A Standard: To combat file format obsolescence, AJIS utilizes PDF/A (the ISO-standardized version of PDF) for long-term archiving. PDF/A ensures that the visual appearance of the document is preserved regardless of future software updates.

Redundant Server Backups: The AJIS website and database undergo daily automated backups to independent cloud storage providers. This ensures immediate recovery in the event of local hardware failure or malicious cyber activities.

Format Migration: The editorial board periodically reviews emerging file standards. If current formats are deemed at risk of becoming unreadable, AJIS commits to migrating all legacy content to newer, stable formats without altering the original scholarly content.

4

Self-Archiving (Green Open Access)

Authors are encouraged to self-archive the Version of Record (Publisher's PDF) in their institutional repositories, personal websites, or subject-specific repositories (e.g., Zenodo, SSRN, or Academia.edu) immediately upon publication.

AJIS is registered with Sherpa/Romeo, and our policy allows for maximum dissemination. By encouraging authors to store copies of their work across multiple platforms, we collectively strengthen the digital footprint and permanence of the research.

Emergency Access & Trigger Events

In the highly unlikely event that the Assyfa Journal of Islamic Studies ceases publication or its website becomes permanently unavailable, the journal has established agreements with our archiving partners to trigger "open access" to our dark archives.

This ensures that even if the publisher disappears, the scientific record remains intact and accessible to the public through the CLOCKSS global archive and the PKP Preservation Network. We view the preservation of Islamic scholarship as a sacred trust that transcends the lifespan of any single organization.
